About Us

SAFErs are volunteers, educators, experts and activists. Our goal is to ensure that young people everywhere are able to enjoy their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) by leading and empowering a network of young people from Europe and Central Asia. These young volunteers are educating their peers and advocating for young people to claim their SRHR and to take part in shaping societies. We believe that all young people should have the right to decide of their own bodies and to be able to express their gender- and sexual identities without fear of discrimination or violence. Our main areas of work are within comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and youth centered approaches (YCA). Our network is one of the youth networks of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). We are non-religious and non-governmental.

YSAFE was officially formed by young members of IPPF in 2006 as the federation wanted to engage more young people. The network has since grown to be more independent and is a part of the decision making processes within the IPPF. We also have our own structure with the annual meeting as our highest decision-making organ where an executive Steering Committee is elected each year. YSAFE is an acronym of “Youth Sexual Awareness For Europe”, but we are working equally in Central Asia and Europe and many of our members are russian-speaking.

Our Members

All YSAFErs are also members in one of IPPF’s member associations in Europe or Central Asia. There are over 30 MAs in this region and all of them face very similar AND very different issues when it comes to SRHR. You can find our MAs here:

To be a YSAFE member you have to be 25 years old or younger and part of a national MA. You can either write directly to us on YSAFE@IPPFEN.ORG and we will send you an application form or you can ask the youth coordinator at your MA. Each year one YSAFE member from each MA is selected to participate in the democratic processes of YSAFE and attend the Annual Meeting. All YSAFE members can run to become a member of the Steering Committee which is an exciting and international experience.

There are many other ways to be an active YSAFEr too. Our members have access to forums of young people from around the world to discuss with, shared resources in our newsletters as well as our calls for project participants. There are also possibilities to write on our blog or post on our social media. We also work in task forces throughout the year focusing on subjects like communications, advocacy and the future of our network.
